i don’t have a spotify wrapped so here is the general vibe of what i listened to

Elsewhere, there is a post of my favorite albums of 2024, which is underwritten and needs some more oomph. This isn’t that. I have my favorite albums, and then I have all the listening I did, all the music that didn’t stand out, or stood out for a day or two, and then I moved on. That’s valid too! There’s a lot of stuff that I liked just fine and might return to in the future, or not at all.

I really liked Like Roses’ EP/single Broken Things (Lie to Me)”, which is a refreshing blast of emo with mathy guitars, but mathy in a subtle way that serve the songs.

I really enjoyed listening to all sorts of blackgaze and doom metal, even if only a few individual releases stood out to me. Labels like Flowing Downward and These Hands Melt are places I keep returning to. The latter even gives out download codes to people on their mailing list. I’d love to put out music on labels like these in the future; places that feel like labels as much as they feel like curated playlists of obscure music.

I really enjoyed poking my head into the ambient world, as far as my attention span would let me. As I’ve said, taylor deupree’s ash is pretty stunning, and I’m a big fan in getting lost in Whisper Glyphs by Jogging House & The Lifted Index. Sometimes in the tired night it’s better to pay attention to the nuances of ambient than the cathartic excess of blackgaze.

I’ve had a great time listening to music this year. Cataloguing my records on Discogs, building out an owned collection of digital music, listening to full albums, not relying on an algorithm to tell me what to explore next but relying on my own taste and desire to find more cool stuff. My Spotify wrapped is that I’ve wrapped up using Spotify and started owning my musical journey. This is my piece of the internet and my music is mine and that’s a small step in the right direction.
