If you go back and read any of my previous blog posts about this Jamuary, you’ll see some usual suspects: the iPad, Decent Sampler, big reverbs and weird granular multi-effects and other things that make sounds ambient.
Today’s entry, I regret to inform you, is more of the above. Except for one thing:
I’ll admit that I wasn’t too excited about this while making it, but I had been puttering around for an hour and didn’t have the time or stamina to start over.1 I hit record while shrugging my shoulders and muttering “whatever” to no one.
But Jamuary is nothing if not a learning experience! In a moment of who gives a shit, I pushed the string track toward the end, placing it forward in the mix way more nakedly than I’d normally feel careful doing. And it’s kind of neat! It’s something organic and immediate rising from the reverbial soup. I haven’t done that this month, and it’s a cool way to break out of the sound-painting I’ve been doing. Drums weren’t it, but an ominous violin drone was. Huh!
I did spend most of my time outfitting this thing with a drum beat in Patterning that went fully muted when it was time to record. I can’t figure out how to add percussion into these droney ambiences just yet.↩︎
